Dmitry Morozov (::vtol::), a transdisciplinary artist and researcher, an inventor of musical instruments and creator of art objects.
The studio deals with the widest range of creative and organizational tasks necessary for artists' professional development and growth. Each of the students proposes a new idea and receives extensive feedback from both the teacher and fellow students. This allows you to quickly develop and learn about the complex "production" process of new projects. The main emphasis is on a balanced approach to the creative process in the context of art & science practices; projects must meet certain genre criteria, be relevant and technically/conceptually feasible.
Boris Shershenkov, a PhD, sound artist, engineer, media archeologist and designer of musical instruments.
The studio focuses on sound as a physical phenomenon and a special form of temporal existence of information. Students examine the physical and psychoacoustic features of sound; its use as a tool that opens up new ways of interacting with the objects and processes that exist in the outside world, physics of motion, space, environment, and human memory; the relationship between the auditory and the visual in the context of electronic synesthesia and media archaeology; as well as performative techniques of experimental and technological art that flourished in art & science.

The studio's goal is to develop ideas for art projects in the field of bioart and prepare them for practical implementation. Together with Ippolit, students nurture teamwork skills and study the basic methods of creative and scientific research, critical thinking, experiments planning, and project management.
Helena Nikonole, a media artist, independent curator, and educator whose field of interest embraces hybrid art, the new aesthetics, the Internet of Things, and Artificial Intelligence.
Helena Nikonole's studio deals with hybrid arts and artificial intelligence in arts. During the seminars, students explore possible strategies for art & science practices and develop critical approaches to technologies. A substantial part of the work in the studio is devoted to discussions of students' projects as well as practical aspects such as an eventual visual representation of the project and preparation of documentation.
Ildar Iakubov, a media artist, curator of the art program of Science Fest and the educational program of the Festival of Light, as well as the Episode media project.
Media artist, researcher of linguistic media art and curator of the 101 Mediapoetry Festival.
At the studio, students work with a specific topos and examine its geological, ecological, and social history. Together with Natalia, students study texts on environmental philosophy (Timothy Morton, Ben Woodard, Bruno Latour) and the history of technology (Gilbert Simondon, Georges Canguilhem, Vilém Flusser, Friedrich A. Kittler), as well as work with archival records and maps. In addition, students are engaged in field research and collection of documentation on-site. For example, in 2020, the subject of their study was the Sestroretskoye Swamp nature reserve. Thus, the site becomes a scenario for the creation of collective artwork.

Which proficiency level of English is required to enroll into the Master's program?
B2 and higher.
Can I apply to the program with a bachelor's and master's degree in any specialty?
In which format is the graduation project undertaken?
You have three options for choosing the implementation of your graduation project:

  1. An individual research paper
  2. An art project exhibited by Art.ITMO.Residency or any other space
  3. Curatorial project
Is it possible to spend a semester abroad while studying at the program?
Of course! ITMO University holds its internal competition for international academic exchange applicants twice a year: in September (for exchanges in the following spring semester) and in February (for exchanges in the following fall semester). You also have a chance to get financial support for short-term trips (such as internships, workshops, conferences, competitions, summer and winter schools) of up to 70% of expenses and 70,000 rubles. Preference is given to tuition-free students.
Can I apply for a state-funded seat if I am not a citizen of Russia?
Foreign citizens from Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, as well as compatriots (CIS) can apply for a state-funded seast on an equal basis with citizens of the Russian Federation. The competition for state-funded seats is common. Foreign citizens of non-CIS countries should pay tuition fees. Foreign citizens have the right to enroll in tuition-free positions of ITMO University's Master's programs through the Rossotrudnichestvo federal agency as part of a Russian Government scholarship.

ВКР как арт-проект
Все магистранты Университета ИТМО, вне зависимости от специализации могут реализовать выпускную квалификационную работу в формате арт-проекта на базе центра Центр Art & Science.
Данная инициатива предполагает создание работы, которая задействует современные технологии и научные разработки, а также обладает оригинальной художественной концепцией. Итогом работы станет объект, который магистранты смогут представить на выставке дипломных работ выпускников магистратуры Art & Science в Art.ITMO.Residency (май-июнь 2022г.).
В 2021 году участники инициативы успешно защитили свои ВКР в формате арт-проекта и выставили свои работы совместно с дипломными проектами студентов магистратуры Art & Science на выставке технологического искусства STAGE.

The international scholarship is awarded to 1 applicant, who is eager to create multidisciplinary projects at Art&Science master's program at ITMO University, St.Petersburg, Russia.

The scholarship covers tuition fees for 2 years of study, final art production expenses up to 25 000 Rubles. All other expenses (travel, visa, accommodation) are covered by the applicant.

Eligibility: eligible applicants are holders of Bachelor's degree in art related or any other field (Fine Arts, Fine Arts / Visual Arts / Graphic Design, Computer animation, other) with experience in working on science art projects, firm commitment to continue work in art & science field.

How to apply?
In order to apply you need to meet the entrance requirements to the master's program and additionally provide the following documents:

1. Motivational letter (700 words max) explaining why this scholarship should be awarded to you;

2. Two recommendation letters from a representative of the professional community or from a research supervisor as part of mastering the previous level of education. The letters should be in English and contain contact details of the referees;

3. Portfolio of projects: implementation of at least 3 projects presented as part of an individual and (or) collective exhibition within the last 5 years, followed by a review of the exhibition in professional publications. Curatorial projects could also be included;

4. Possession of one or more IT tools at a basic level (confirmed by a certificate of completion of training or experience in using these tools in professional activities):
  • basics of coding (python, processing, java or other);
  • visual programming (vvvv, touch designer, grasshopper or other);
  • 3d modeling (blender, maya, rhinoceros 3d or other);
  • video and photo editing (adobe package or other);
5. Publications: at least 1 publication in English with a volume of at least 5000 characters in a professional edition.

Deadline for application: August 5.

After the application shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview. The final results will be announced on August 10.

Responsibilities of successful applicants:
  • full attendance of the classes;
  • good/excellent grades for the courses;
  • participating in min. 2 exhibitions during the studies (in Russia or abroad);
  • engagement to Art&Science center's activities (events, exhibition, research, etc) up to 10 hours per week;
  • positive commitment to continuing science art practices and research in this area;
  • readiness to share your experience, collaborate with students, researchers.

Digital Art:
The New Spatial
Digital Art is a discipline of quantification. It quantifies and digitalizes the surrounding information, transforming it into byte sized messages, crossing the class and agency boundaries. The city, the nature, the body, the text it all become bits, transferring from one atomic piece into another. The networks forming new communal, distributed and duplicated, they are the ecosystems that we work with. The natural species are the same informational material as a synthetic once, communicating through the digital commune, forming an ecosystemic interactions that we build the datascapes from.

The target of a digital art specialization is to build a flat space for multiagent communication. The space will live as a series of artworks, ranging from mobile applications for communicating with natural agents through digital networks to vr and augmented reality applications, integrated into common city environments. The Digital Art specialisation will explore how Virtual and Augmented reality systems can be used for extending spatial properties of our surrounding environments. Students will learn such skills as 3d modelling, extended reality applications engineering, 3d scanning, data processing, virtual architecture and critical technological thinking.

Technological Art: Towards A New Intelligence
"We live in an age of neo-mechanism, in which technical objects are becoming organic" (Hui, 2019). Progress in genetic engineering, synthetic biology, rapid development of autonomous robotics and artificial neural networks develop a new sensibility towards the algorithmical, technological, geological and biological other. Bio-artificial intelligence involves all aspects of planetary communication, interspecies interaction, as well as spatial and material organisation. Today's omnipresent, systemic and intelligent technologies are actualising a new kind of cognitive noosphere which is embodied in profound material transformations that involve the structures of our brains, bodies, the spaces we inhabit and the ecosystems we belong to.

Technological art is a multidisciplinary and practice-oriented major which integrates advanced technologies and ubiquitous computing into its basis in order to open the possibilities of a new found aesthetic and bio-machinic intelligence. Shaped around the contemporary aspects of art and technology, the program explores intelligent algorithms through their convergence with non-human intelligence with an aim to explore other forms of expression in the artistic research. As a part of the major, students explore a set of skills and techniques such as machine learning and advanced computation, material programming and bio-digital fabrication, physical computing and immersive interfaces, tangible media and robotic automation, audio and visual synthesis, as well as gain theoretical knowledge in the fields of contemporary art and technology.

Bioart: Biomedia And The New Nature
Bioart is a contemporary art form that adapts scientific methods, biology, ecology, and biotechnology (including technologies such as genetic engineering, tissue culture, and cloning) to explore living systems as artistic subjects. It quantifies and exposes the biological relationships and with other artificial and technological entities from a biological approach.

Bioart major is an Interdisciplinary program that blurs the boundaries between art and modern biology by making a strong emphasis on philosophical, societal, and environmental issues of the current world. Bioart plays an important role in critical thinking, by challenging emerging life science applications, stimulating scientific thinking, and contributing to new research questions and new technologies.

The use of life sciences as inspiration and technology for the production of artworks allows students to create projects related to the philosophical tendencies of interspecies communication, posthumanism, synthetic machines, and biopolitics, bringing up ethical, social, and aesthetic inquiries.
